Bonaqua Marketing Campaigns

Bonaqua Marketing Campaigns

In 2019, Off Limit marketing agency hired Thingking Studio to re-design some marketing campaign structures that needed improvements. I worked as an Industrial Design freelancer for Thingking Studio, on this project.

Bonaqua Swop Shop

I took the lead on this project with guidance from the Thingking team.

Task

Improve the design of a 1.5m cube structure that manually accepts used plastic bottles and offers a gift in return. A person would stand inside the structure to play pre-recorded responses and manually dispense a gift.

The front of the structure would need to include 500ml plastic Bonaqua bottles that could be replaced if damaged. The structure would need to flat pack for easy transport on trailers as well as be easy to set up with a few simple tools by a few promotional personnel.

I 3D modeled and rendered various design options and iterations.

Once the design was approved, the client asked for two or three units and I produced manufacturing drawings for laser cutting, welding and assembly. I also sourced the materials, components, applied the vinyl branding with the help of the team and managed the production and test setups in the workshop.

The final design was made up of light weight polystyrene based prefab material with aluminium U channel for the 3 walls and roof. The rest of the structure was made up of welded aluminium to keep everything as light as possible. All the 6 sides of the cube bolted to each other with custom made corner brackets.

Inside the structure was a frame that folded down, for a black bag to fit around for the throwaway bottles. As well as a removable flap for the prize to be dispense, and space for a speaker and tablet to attach to for the promotor to use when operating the Swop Shop.

The front of the structure was separated with flat bar that the bottle tops were permanently screwed onto. This way the bottles could be screwed into and out of the caps when replacements were needed.

Bonaqua Street Light & Bench

I was involved in conceptualising and product design for this project, as well as 3D modeling and rendering for presentation to the client, before manufacturing.

Task:

Design a solar powered street light and bench, that used 500ml Bonaqua plastic bottles, in order to provide a sense of safety in dark public spaces. The structure would need to accommodate space for branding too.

I created concept sketches, 3D models and renders of designs for presentation before handing the project over the Thingking team to complete the extensive work in manufacturing and installing three of the units for installation in informal settlement areas in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Unfortunately I do not have any photos of these projects in reality but both went up and out with success.

I had fun with learned a lot by witnessing and being actively involved in bringing these projects to life.
